This workshop celebrates the banana plant’s versatility, from its fruit and blossoms to its leaves. Participants will explore its cultural and culinary significance in traditional Malay cooking, highlighting its role in heritage preservation and sustainable practices.
Founded by Raja Mohd Fairuz, Kebon Dapor is an urban greenhouse located at City Sprouts in Punggol, Singapore. It focuses on growing plants commonly used in traditional Malay cuisine, such as, chili padi and laksa leaves. Inspired by the spirit of a Malay village, Kebon Dapor integrates elements of Malay heritage in its design, featuring batik fabric decorations and a communal atmosphere. Raja is an architecture lecturer with a passion for sustainable gardening. He started the Kebon Dapor project in 2023 to explore edible gardening and promote the spirit of collaboration and learning.
Dapur Cahaya is run by Suria, who is passionate about traditional Malay cuisine and rediscovering her cultural roots. She regularly cooks classic dishes such as nasi ulam, terung balado and sambal goreng, sharing her culinary journey with the community. In collaborations with the urban farm Kebon Dapor, she leads workshops and live cooking stations. Through these events, she explores and promotes the rich heritage of Malay cuisine in Singapore, emphasising the importance of cultural preservation through food.
Beverley Ng is an artist and designer recognised for her ephemera-rich collage style and intimate pencil illustrations that capture diary-like narratives. There is a tactile, printed charm to her work as she combines layered textures and nostalgic materials, weaving stories that resonate with the viewer. Ng has contributed art direction and illustrations to cultural institutions like Esplanade, The Substation and the Singapore Art Museum. She also leads zine workshops, guiding others to explore collage and found materials as a means of reconnecting through the art of printed communication.
